"Secrets' is the modern Bowditch, written so clearly that navigation and seamanship will be comprehensible to anyone . . ." -- Dave and Jaja Martin, circumnavigators and authors of Into the Light: A Family's Epic Journey "It's a great book. The prose is simple and clear . . ." --John Vigor, author of The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat "The nautical tips and techniques presented are encyclopedic, yet the clear explanations demystify the topics . . ." -- Don Launer, contributing editor for Good Old Boat magazine "It is a fine piece of work and should be read by anyone contemplating coastal cruising or blue water voyages. It definitely deserves a place in the offshore yacht's library . . ." --Ted Brewer, yacht designer, author, and offshore racing and cruising sailor Be a Better Skipper In the night, wind, rain, fog, big seas, strong currents, or congested waters, when there’s no time for textbook seamanship solutions, what you need are shortcuts and techniques that work quickly and reliably every time. Distilled from the vast accumulated lore of seamanship and navigation, here are the absolute essentials--185 techniques that work without fail in the pilothouse or the exposed cockpit or flying bridge of a shorthanded sail- or powerboat. John Jamieson shows you how to: Set up a clipboard chart table for cockpit use Avoid hazards with danger bearings or a GPS grid highway Estimate current speeds with the 50-90-100 rule Track other boats in poor visibility using radar plots and bearing drift Sail home without a rudder or get your twin-screw boat home on one working engine Dock or anchor under any conditions And much, much more Even in this age of electronic navigation you need to know how to eyeball your boat through any situation. Each of the techniques in this cut-to-the-chase book has shown itself to be absolutely repeatable. It will work this time, the next time, and the time a er that, in conditions fair or foul.

Dockmanship, according to author Bell, is "the art, skill, and practice of safely berthing and unberthing a vessel." Anyone who's ever spent time observing the action at a marina or boat ramp will concede that the way the docking skill is practiced by many recreational boaters today can hardly be considered an "art." Here, finally, is a book that provides the needed information to turn any skipper -- even a novice -- into a master of the docking art. Captains who feel they already perform well behind the helm will enjoy reviewing the standard and advanced techniques contained in this easily understood manual. The basics of rudders, propellers, lines, and fenders used on small to medium-sized boats are completely explored. For each type of propulsion (inboard, outboard, single-screw, double-screw, and sail), techniques are described for maneuvering port side to, starboard side to, stern in, and bow in, as well as for getting away and handling the boat in close quarters. For each of these situations, the author also clarifies the effects of wind and current.

The New Coastal History

This book provides a pathway for the New Coastal History. Our littorals are all too often the setting for climate change and the political, refugee and migration crises that blight our age. Yet historians have continued, in large part, to ignore the space between the sea and the land. Through a range of conceptual and thematic chapters, this book remedies that. Scotland, a country where one is never more than fifty miles from saltwater, provides a platform as regards the majority of chapters, in accounting for and supporting the clusters of scholarship that have begun to gather around the coast. The book presents a new approach that is distinct from both terrestrial and maritime history, and which helps bring environmental history to the shore. Its cross-disciplinary perspectives will be of appeal to scholars and students in those fields, as well as in the environmental humanities, coastal archaeology, human geography and anthropology.

The citizens of the Marshall Islands have been told that climate change will doom their country, and they have seen confirmatory omens in the land, air, and sea. This book investigates how grassroots Marshallese society has interpreted and responded to this threat as intimated by local observation, science communication, and Biblical exegesis. With grounds to dismiss or ignore the threat, Marshall Islanders have instead embraced it; with reasons to forswear guilt and responsibility, they have instead adopted in-group blame; and having been instructed that resettlement is necessary, they have vowed instead to retain the homeland. These dominant local responses can be understood as arising from a pre-existing, vigorous constellation of Marshallese ideas termed "modernity the trickster": a historically inspired narrative of self-inflicted cultural decline and seduction by Euro-American modernity. This study illuminates islander agency at the intersection of the local and the global, and suggests a theory of risk perception based on ideological commitment to narratives of historical progress and decline.
