Has globalization forever undermined the state as the mighty guarantor of public welfare and security? In the 1990s, the prevailing and even hopeful view was that it had. The euphoria did not last long. Today the "return of the state" is increasingly being discussed as a desirable reality. This book is the first to bring together a group of prominent scholars from comparative politics, international relations, and sociology to systematically reassess--through a historical lens that moves beyond the standard focus on the West--state-society relations and state power at the dawn of the twenty-first century. The contributors examine the sources and forms of state power in light of a range of welfare and security needs in order to tell us what states can do today. They assess the extent to which international social forces affect states, and the capacity of states to adapt in specific issue areas. Their striking conclusion is that states have continued to be pivotal in diverse areas such as nationalism, national security, multiculturalism, taxation, and industrial relations. Offering rich insights on the changing contours of state power, The Nation-State in Question will be of interest to social scientists, students, and policymakers alike. John Hall's introduction is followed by chapters by Peter Baldwin, John Campbell, Francesco Duina, Grzegorz Ekiert, Jeffrey Herbst, Christopher Hood, Anatoly Khazanov, Brendan O'Leary, T. V. Paul, Bernard Yack, Rudra Sil, and Minxin Pei. The conclusion is by John Ikenberry.

This study is a comprehensive scholarly treatment of Norman Mailer's entire "oeuvre," including not only his fiction and non-fiction, but also his correspondence, his early journal articles and his interviews. It outlines Mailer's "Entwicklungsgeschichte," illuminating the lines of continuity and discontinuity in his literary achievement and shows Mailer's work to be firmly ensconced in the tradition of Modernism and inspired by the Pound-Eliot axis. It argues that Mailer's literary opus is intertwined with his worldview, which, despite its inconsistencies and contradictions, contains a systematic structure.

Application of International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law to the Armed Conflicts of the Sudan

The death toll resulting from all the armed conflicts in the Sudan, including south Sudan and Darfur, has far exceeded that of the victims of many recent conflicts combined together; more than those of Rwanda, Former Yugoslavia, Sierra Leone and East Timor. Despite the tragic death toll, massive displacement, alleged genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, the Sudanese case has neither featured in the legal literature nor been mentioned in the practice of international Tribunals. This book aims to rectify this by focusing on the Sudans armed conflicts as a case study. Unlike the approach followed in the preponderant legal literature, which tends to focus on International Humanitarian Law as the only applicable regime in armed conflicts, this book brings on board Human Rights Law, which can be applied side by side with International Humanitarian Law. In this sense, it tries to build bridges between the two branches of international law. It focuses on the operation of both regimes at three levels: their scope of application, the protection they afford, and how they can be enforced or implemented. It critically highlights the Sudans laws and how they cohere with or contradict International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law. It particularly examines the Sudans military, criminal and Islamic laws and judicial practices and analyzes them in the light of International treaties ratified by the Sudan. It draws heavily on the practice of regional and UN human rights bodies and humanitarian organizations such as the ICRC. The legal materials included in the book constitute a good resource for future work in the field. Most of the materials were written in Arabic, and hence are unavailable in other jurisdictions. Thus, including them as translated materials will prove to be of great value for those who intend to familiarize themselves with the Sudans laws and practices in this field. With a preface by Jan Pronk, Former Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN to Sudan.

More fascinating than fiction, Seduced by Secrets takes the reader inside the real world of one of the most effective and feared spy agencies in history. The book reveals the secret technical methods and sources of the Stasi (East German Ministry for State Security) as it stole secrets from abroad and developed gadgets at home. Seduced by Secrets draws on secret files from the Stasi archives to demonstrate that the Stasi overestimated the power of secrets to solve problems and created an insular spy culture more intent on securing its power than protecting national security. It recreates the Stasi's secret world of technology through biographies of agents, defectors, and officers and by visualizing James Bond-like techniques and gadgets. In this highly original book, Kristie Macrakis adds a new dimension to our understanding of the Stasi by bringing the topic into the realm of espionage history and exiting the political domain.

Platonic Studies

This book consists of Gregory Vlastos' studies on a variety of themes in Plato's metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and social philosophy. Although many of the essays have appeared in various philosophical and classical journals or symposia, new in the volume are two major studies. One is on Plato's theory of love, exploring its metaphysical dimension and its far-reaching implications for personal and political relations. The other centers on semantic and logical problems in the Sophist; it offers solutions to crucial difficulties in this fundamental Platonic work. In these essays the author presents ideas which are likely to provoke comment and may be discussed as vigorously in scholarly journals as has some of his earlier work. The other papers, some of them extensively revised, comprise virtually all the author's published work on Plato, with the exception of a few papers easily accessible elsewhere. This second edition includes three additional essays and extensive notes that were not included in the original edition.
